State-of-the-art satellite based solutions for water resources management was a topic of the meeting with Polish Institute of Meteorology and Water Management which took place in Warsaw on November 15, 2016.
The meeting organized as a part of EO4EP project (Earth Observation for Eastern Partnership) provided opportunity to present and discuss products of Astri Polska and GEOSYSTEMS related with natural hazard risk management.
The Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW)is Polish state-owned research and development unit offering various services and expertises in the field of meteorology and hydrology which also serves as one of the implementing agencies for the WBG Odra-Vistula Flood Management Project, in particular as a responsible for implementation of the Flood Forecasting System
The meeting with the EO4EP team provided opportunity to present and discuss utility of EO-based products related to natural hazard and risk management with particular emphasis on river monitoring, soil moisture, snow and land cover as well as EO-derived digital elevation models
Satellite EO technology has been recognized as an important contribution to Odra-Vistula project efforts especially with the Sentinel satellites capabilities that can provide operational support to the crisis decision making and the future upgraded national flood forecasting. Several pilot areas have been proposed as suitable for implementation of demonstration activities including Narew, Biebrza, Bug, Pilica rivers basin to provide river ice monitoring. Prosna river basin for modelling of biomass growth in the floodplain and verification of roughness coefficient as well as digital elevation models for flood modelling in Bug river basin.
